Sample Text The two major aspects of the hadith are the text of testimony (matn) which consists of a specific story and the chain of narrators (isnad) which documents the path by which the testimony was transmitted. The term sanad, literally support, gained such a name thanks to the reliability of hadith experts, on the basis of which the credibility or soundness of hadith is determined. An isnad consists of a chronological list of narrators, with each of them mentioning the one from whom he heard the hadith in question until the mention of the man from whom the matn originated along with the matn itself. The first hadith was heard by the followers of Muhammad who preserved it and then passed it on to those who came after them. Then the generation after them received it and passed it on to those who follow, etc.
