Sample Text The Five Pillars of Islam (arkn-al-Islam; also arkan ad-din pillars of religion) represent the five basic works in Islam that Sunni Muslims consider obligatory. They are briefly presented in the famous hadith about the Archangel Gabriel. The Koran presents them as a framework for religious activity and a sign of submission to religion. These are: 1. shahada (expression of faith), 2. daily prayers (salat), 3. fasting during the month of Ramadan (saum), 4. giving alms (zaka) and 5. pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) at least once in a lifetime. Minority Shiites and majority Sunnis agree on the essential details of the implementation of these acts, but Shiites do not call them by the same name. Year of publication: 1642/43.
