| Sample Text | Often, even highly educated speakers of Modern Standard Arabic will apply vowel retraction rules from their native dialects. So, for example, in the Arabic of a person from Cairo, emphatic consonants will affect all vowels between words, while a Saudi will show emphaticity only in vowels next to an emphatic consonant. Some speakers (most notably Levantine speakers) show some degree of asymmetry in the spread of vowel retraction to the left versus the right. Year of publication: 1792/93. |
