| Sample Text | Abjad is such a writing system in which one symbol always or usually denotes one consonant; the reader must use the appropriate vowel himself. It is a term introduced by Peter T. Daniels to replace the term consonantal or syllabic alphabet which indicated a family of letters called the West Semitic family of letters. In widespread use, Abjads often contain the word alphabet in the name, such as the Arabic alphabet and the Phoenician alphabet. The name Abjad itself comes from the Arabic word for alphabet. The word alphabet in Serbian originates from the Greek language, where the first two letters are A (alpha) and B (beta), so the alphabet. In Arabic, A (Alif), B (Ba), G (Gim), D (Dal) make up the word abjad, which means alphabet. |
