| Sample Text | The two acts in Islam are mentioning or experiencing that there is no god but God and verifying or testifying that Muhammad is God's messenger. In the third meaning, shahad can mean martyrdom, a shahid (martyr) who shows the ultimate expression of faith. One sincere recitation of the Shahada in Arabic is all that is required to become a Muslim. That statement or testimony of faith is called kalima, literally word. Reciting the shahada, or oath or testimony, is the most important of the five pillars of Islam for Muslims. Non-Muslims who wish to convert to Islam do so by publicly proclaiming this belief. In a technical sense, the Shi'a do not consider the shahada to be a separate pillar of Islam but associate it with the aqeedah. The complete shahada is not found in the Koran but derives from the hadith. Year of publication: 1713. |
