Sample Text On many occasions in the period between 610 AD and Muhammad's death on June 8, 632, the Koran was allegedly written down by Muhammad's companions (sahaba) while he was still alive, although the original method of transmission was oral. It was compiled during the time of Abu Bakr, the first caliph, and standardized under the rule of Uthman, the third caliph. The Koran is divided into one hundred and fourteen surahs, or chapters, in which six thousand two hundred and thirty-six verses or verses are combined. The chronologically earlier surahs, revealed in Mecca, primarily deal with ethical and spiritual issues. In the later, Medinan surahs, social and moral issues important to the Muslim community are mostly discussed. The Koran deals more with moral instructions than legal rules and is considered the book from which Islamic principles and values originate.
