| Sample Text | One tafseer may differ from another when interpreting the Qur'an. There are certain reasons for this, but the most important can be external or internal in nature. For example, according to Ibn Taymiyyah, the mufasir may have unreliable material, so his interpretation rests on some preconceived notion or some other motive, which thus leads to a false discovery, bidah. Some mufasirs use the Israiliyat, the Jewish sources of the stories mentioned in the Koran, especially those derived from the non-canonical traditions of Jews and Christians. Such material was used by some of the circle of sahaba (Muhammad's followers), but it was used more by their successors and later generations. Another difference may be of an internal nature. |
