| Sample Text | The Arabs, like the Hindus, freely operated with irrational numbers. However, they took a step back as they dropped negative numbers despite taking over from the Indians. In the field of algebra, the Arabs contributed first of all with the name. The word algebra comes from the title of a textbook on the subject, Hisab al-jabrw'almuqabala (Calculation by Completing and Balancing) written around 830 by the astronomer and mathematician Mohammed ibn Musa al-Khowarizmi. This title is sometimes translated as Renewing and Simplifying or Rearranging and Shortening. Our word algorithm is a corrupted form of al-Khwarizmi's name. Year of publication: 1609. |
