| Sample Text | Just as Ali refused to give his allegiance (baya) to Abu Bakr, so many Muslims of Medina refused and were called Shia Ali (Party of Ali). It took six months of threats and pressure to persuade the opponents to submit to Abu Bakr. However, because he refused to give his loyalty, Ali's house was surrounded by an armed force led by Abu Bakr and Umar.
