Sample Text Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (838-923) is known for having written a detailed and exhaustive history of the Mediterranean and the Middle East in the History of the Prophets and Kings, from 915. Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Masudi (896-956), known as the Arab Herodotus, was the first to combine history and scientific geography in the voluminous work Murujadh-dhahabwama'adin al-jawahir (Fields of Gold and Gem Mines), a history of the world. Until the tenth century, history most often meant political and military history, but the Persian historian Biruni (973-1048) changed that. In Kitab fi Tahqiq ma l'il-Hind (Explorations of India), he did not record any details of political and military history but rather wrote about the cultural, scientific, social and religious history of India. Along with the Explorations of India, Biruni discussed his understanding of history in more detail in the chronological work Chronology of Ancient Nations.
