| Sample Text | At the end of the eighth century, Euclid's Elements were translated into Arabic in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. There are numerous Arabic editions and commentaries of the Elements, which indicate how much influence Euclid had on Islamic mathematics and especially on geometry. Muslim metamathematicians showed great respect for Archimedes' work On the Ball and Cylinder. In his preface, Archimedes mentions the discovery of the segment of the parabola; since his treatise on the subject had not been translated into Arabic, Thabit ibn Qura and his grandson Ibrahim ibn Sinan searched (with great success) for proof of Archimedes' discovery. |
