| Sample Text | The Arabic alphabet can be traced back to the Nabataean alphabet, which was used to write the Nabataean dialect of Aramaic. The first known text in the Arabic alphabet is an inscription from the end of the fourth century AD in Jabal Rama (50 km east of Aqaba), but the first dated one is a trilingual inscription in Zebed in Syria from the year 512. However, epigraphic records are extremely scattered, of which only five certainly pre-Islamic Arabic inscriptions have been preserved, although some others may also be pre-Islamic. Later, dots were added below and above the letters to distinguish them. |
