Sample Text After the Prophet's death, his companions taught others the Koran and its interpretation. Scholars recognize that the Khulafa Rashidun, the Rightly Guided (successors of Muhammad), were the interpreters of the Qur'an. Among others from the Prophet's time who were recognized as experts in the interpretation of the Qur'an were: Abdullah ibn Abbas (died 687), Abdullah ibn Masud (died 653), Ubayy ibn Kab (died 640), Zayd ibn Thabit (died 665), Abu Musa al-Ashari (died 664) and Abdullah ibn Zubayr (died 692). It is generally believed that three schools of Qur'anic interpretation were established in the post-Muhammad period: the Meccan school led by Abdullah ibn Abbas, the Medina school led by Ubayy ibn Kab, and the Iraqi school led by Abdullah ibn Masud. Year of publication: 1553.
