| Sample Text | Zakat or almsgiving is a practice of charity by Muslims based on accumulated wealth and is obligatory for all who are able to perform it. It is considered a personal obligation for Muslims to ease the financial hardships of others and remove inequality. Zakat means the expenditure of 2.5% of the property for the welfare of the poor and those in need, including slaves, debtors and travelers. A Muslim can give more as an act of voluntary charity (sadaq), and sometimes it is an act of obtaining an additional reward from God. Year of publication: 1768. |
