Shahada is the Islamic expression of faith in the oneness of God (tawheed) and acceptance of Muhammad as a prophet. The statement looks like this: (la ilaha illallah, Muhammad rasulu-llah) There is no god but one God, Muhammad is the prophet of God. In the Shia Muslim tradition, there is the addition wa Ali-yyun wali-yyu-llah [iAliyewali (Viceroy) of God"]. The word shahada is a noun derived from the verb shahida which means to observe, witness or confirm; when used in legal terminology, shahada is a testimony to events such as debt, adultery and divorce.
