Sample Text The revelations (or ayahs, literally "God's signs"), which Muhammad transmitted until his death, form the verses of the Koran, which Muslims regard as the word of God and on which the religion is based. In addition to the Koran, Muslims also rely on Muhammad's life (sira) and tradition (sunna). They treat Muhammad and the other prophets of Islam with respect by adding after his name, whenever they mention him, the phrase "peace be upon him". While representations of Muhammad in medieval Christianity and the pre-modern era were mostly negative, assessments in modern history are far more positive. His life and actions have been the subject of debate and criticism by followers and opponents for centuries. Year of publication: 1855.
