| Sample Text | Sunnis argue that it is wrong to interpret the expression of friendship and support as naming an heir. The fact that there is a leadership dispute after Muhammad's death is proof enough that no one interpreted his words as a binding appointment. On the other hand, the Shiites believe that the participants in the dispute ostentatiously disregarded the hadith of Ghadir and usurped Ali's right to inherit the leadership. In another Sunni version, Ibn Abbas narrates that Muhammad was somewhat wary of people thinking that he was making his family rule over them when Allah commanded him to declare Ali as his successor (at Ghadir Hum). |
