Sample Text A fatwa (plural of fatawa) in the Islamic religion is a judicial act related to Islamic law issued by an Islamic jurist. In Sunni Islam, no fatwa is binding, while in Shia Islam, it may be considered binding, depending on whether the individual is affiliated with the jurist in question. A person who issues a fatwa in this sense is called a mufti, i.e. one who issues a fatwa which comes from the verb 'afta' = "he issued a legal opinion about something". This is not necessarily a formal position since most Muslims maintain that anyone who is instructed in Islamic law can issue an opinion (fatwa) on that teaching. If the fatwa does not represent a precedent, then it is simply called a rule. Year of publication: 1374.
