| Sample Text | The Sunni rulers of the Umayyad dynasty sought to marginalize the Shia minority, while later the Abbasids turned on their Shia allies, imprisoning, persecuting and killing them. The persecution of Sunni co-religionists against Shiites throughout history has often been characterized by torture and genocidal acts. Considering only 10-15% of the total Islamic population, the Shiites remain a marginalized community in many Arab countries with a majority Sunni population, without the right to perform religious services and to organize themselves. Shia groups have faced persecution at various times. |
