| Sample Text | Arabic was not the first Semitic language to show a tendency to overcome its predecessors. Aramaic, the language of the early peoples who lived in Syria and upper Mesopotamia, had already shown such a model before, since it replaced (though not suddenly and immediately) both the Akkadian language of the people who ruled the Tigris and Euphrates basin after the Sumerians (who spoke a non-Semitic language) as well as the Hebrew and other Canaanite languages that were used along the coastal belt of the Middle East.
