| Sample Text | In a fully vocalized Arabic text such as the Qur'an, a long ā followed by a non-hamza consonant is written with a short mark for a (fathom) on the consonant plus an alif after it; long ī is written as a sign for short i (kasra) plus the letter ja, long ū is written as a loop for short u (dama) plus the letter vav. In short, the scheme looks like this: ?a = ā, ?y = ī and ?w = ū. A long ā followed by a hamza can be written with an alif though or a free hamza followed by an alif. Year of publication: 1670. |
