| Sample Text | When Muhammad died, Ali and Muhammad's closest relatives prepared everything for the funeral. While they prepared his body, Abu Bakr, Umar and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (Abu Ubaydah) met with the leaders of Medina and elected Abu Bakr as caliph (caliph). Ali and his family were stunned, but accepted the appointment for the sake of the unity of the young Islamic community. Only after the third caliph Uthman was killed did the Muslims in Medina invite Ali to become the fourth caliph. While Ali was caliph, his capital was in Kufa, today's Iraq.
