| Sample Text | By the ninth century, the number of hadiths had increased enormously. Islamic scholars of the Abbasid period were faced with a huge body of mixed traditions, some of which blatantly contradicted each other. Many of these traditions supported different views on a wide range of conflicting topics. Scholars had to decide which hadith were to be trusted as authentic and which had been invented for political or theological reasons. To achieve this, they used a number of techniques that Muslims today call the science of hadith. |
