| Sample Text | Makames (literally choirs) represent an originally Arabic literary genre of rhyming prose with intervals of poetry where rhetorical extravagance is striking. The manuscripts of Hariri's Makam, the anecdotes of Abu Zayd of Saruj, the fraudulent adventurer, are often illustrated with miniatures. Al-Hariri far surpassed the rhetorical stylistics of Al-Hamadani, the founder of this genre, to the extent that his makamas were used as a textbook of rhetoric and lexicography (a cataloging of rare words from Bedouin speech in the seventh and eighth centuries) and as a real textbook until the beginning of the modern era. |
