| Sample Text | The Ottoman Empire, founded in the middle of the Middle Ages, was the last great Sunni empire. (It effectively abolished the institution of the caliphate in the early twentieth century.) By the end of the Middle Ages, however, the position of caliph was largely honorary, as opposed to a title of actual political and spiritual authority. Despite the grand vision of a universal community, which may refer to an ideological identity rather than an ethnic or political one, throughout the history of Sunni Islam, the concept of community has been of an extremely local type.
