| Sample Text | A fatwa is the opinion of a person knowledgeable in Islam about something concerning Islamic law. It is brought by a prominent religious authority in Islam. In Islam, there is no hierarchical priesthood or anything similar, so the fatwa is not necessarily binding on the believers. Individuals who issue such decisions should be knowledgeable about Islam and base their decisions on knowledge and wisdom. It is important to substantiate the proof from Islamic sources. It is rare for Islamic experts to offer different rulings on the same issue. Believers themselves should look at the opinion, the reputation of the person issuing it, the evidence given to support it and finally decide whether to follow it or not. If they are faced with conflicting opinions issued by various scholars, they must compare them and then choose the opinion that their God-given conscience leads them to. |
