| Sample Text | Tradition records at length the persecution and mistreatment of Muhammad and his followers. Sumaya bint Khabab, the slave of the prominent Meccan leader Abu Jahl, is famous for being the first martyr in Islam as she was killed by her master with a spear when she refused to renounce her faith. Bilal, another Muslim slave, was tortured by Umayyad ibn Khalaf who placed a heavy stone on his chest to force him to change his religion. Despite the insults, Muhammad was protected from physical violence because he belonged to the Banu Hashim clan. Persecuted by the Meccans, some early converts to Islam sought refuge in the Aksumite state. Year of publication: 1476. |
