The opening of the manuscript:
Praise be to God whose veil is invincible, His lofty wardship, His hidden secrets, His hidden lights, His lights that are apparent, His infinite reach, His lofty reach, the righteous one is His words... Now to come: The most noble and useful of sciences is the hadith of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace... And all the sciences are a branch of it, so I sought the help of God in condensing the book of... Al-Bukhari... and I named this book of mine The Surviving Star... The conclusion of the manuscript:
(Two words beloved to the Most Merciful, light on the tongue, heavy on the scale: Glory be to God and praise be to Him, Glory be to God the Great)
