(In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) The basmalah for all is proven to be preceded by his saying (the Book of Fasting), thus in the narration of most people and in the narration of Al-Nasafi, the Book of Fasting... ... (Chapter) The ruling on (fasting on the day of Ashura)... (When Ramadan was made obligatory) i.e. fasting in the second year in the month of Shaban (he left), may God bless him and grant him peace (the day of Ashura, so whoever wishes may fast it, and whoever wishes may leave it). Al-Hafiz Al-Asqalani said that the people of pre-Islamic times used to fast it...
