Notes
This issue has been discussed throughout history, as there are differences of opinion regarding the implications of the verses associated with torment in the grave in the Holy Quran. It is stated in most Sunni sources that Mu'tazila denies torment in the grave. However, when we look at Mu'tazili and some other Sunni sources, it is seen that this situation does not reflect the truth. Mu'tazila generally bases itself on applying a critical method and interpreting religious texts when examining an issue. Probably, the Mu'tazila's application of the evidence used about torment in the grave to their methods and their different interpretations caused them to be described as "denying the torment in the grave". In this study, we will try to examine how Mu'tazila evaluate the torment in the grave, even though it does not have a homogeneous structure.
