Notes
Most of the Syriac illustrated manuscripts have been studied by Western researchers and brought into the literature. However, many thematic depictions in these manuscripts remain unexplored. One of these themes is the "Annunciation to Mary". In the study; It is aimed to introduce the "Annunciation to Mary" depictions in the 6th and 13th century Bibles that have survived from Syriac manuscripts, to examine and interpret them in terms of style and iconography, and to reveal the text on which the images are based. Brief introductory information about the seven illustrated Bible manuscripts examined is presented; The iconographic and stylistic features and composition design of each painting were evaluated. Using the comparison method, the period characteristics of the "Annunciation to Mary" depictions in Syriac manuscripts with contemporary depictions on the same subject are explained. Thus, within the scope of the subject of "Annunciation to Mary", which has an important place in Christian art, examples of this subject in the Assyrian painting tradition are presented and an idea about their development is given. These examples serve as data for academic studies in this field such as theology, painting and art history.
