Notes This article aims to re-read and re-conceptualize Ibn Khaldun's ideas on diversity, group sentiment and political legitimacy, especially within the context of the contemporary nation-state. Ibn Khaldun said, "It is rare for a dynasty to establish itself strongly in lands where there are many tribes and groups." A high level of diversity (without social cohesion) is considered a danger rather than a promise. This danger is especially a danger to the stability of the state or dynasty. This article will attempt to shed light on the following issues: (a) What social cultures contribute to nation-building in Indonesia? (b) How do minority groups perceive their belonging to the nation and how do they respond to nation formation?
