Notes
This study focuses on the Chaldean people, about whom there is not enough research in Turkey about their pre-Christian history, when they first started to be mentioned in written records in B.C. From the beginning of the 1st millennium B.C., when Mesopotamia came under Persian rule. It focuses on their history up to the 6th century. It is not known exactly when and where the Chaldeans, who lived in Southern Mesopotamia in ancient times in regions close to the Persian Gulf, came to this geography. It is accepted that this people, whose first records are found in Assyrian chronicles, appeared on the stage of Mesopotamian history at the same time as the Arameans and Suteans. When ancient Chaldean history is examined, it is seen that this people entered into an endless struggle with the Assyrian state for Babylonian domination. Chaldeans, who are frequently encountered especially in ancient Assyrian sources, came to power in BC as a result of centuries-long struggles with the Assyrian kingdom. They managed to establish a powerful empire by seizing the Babylonian throne in the 1st millennium BC. As a result of their success against Assyria in the historical process, the Chaldean communities spread northward from their homeland, Chaldea, which was close to the Persian Gulf. As Christianity began to spread in Mesopotamia, people from the Assyrian, Aramaic and Chaldean peoples centered in Antakya and took the name "Syriac", which emerged as a religious term. Existing academic studies on the ancient history of the Chaldeans do not address the issue neatly and by focusing on the Chaldean people, but rather through the relations of the Assyrian empire with the Chaldeans. This study examines the Chaldeans and their homeland, the Chaldean country, from the earliest written records in B.C., when Babylon came under Persian rule. It aims to shed light on their history until 539.
