A. A. Semenov mentions "members of the Mervani sect" in his article "From the beliefs of the Shugnan Ismailis" published in the magazine "Mir Islama = Islamic World" in 1912. Members of this sect elected Marvan bin-al-Hakam (684-685), one of the closest relatives of the third caliph Osman and the fourth caliph from the Umayyads, instead of Ali, as the fourth caliph. These "Mervants" are found mainly in "Chatral and Kandjut", they are also found in some parts of Afghanistan; they speak in the Chatral and Kandjut dialects (depending on where they are found); they occasionally visit Shugnan for trade purposes; they are not well regarded by the Shugnanites, and they never stay overnight in the homes of the Shugnanites.
