Philosophy, which emerged in Ancient Greece, continued its development by undergoing many changes in the period from the 4th century BC to the 1st century BC. Philosophy made its first change by passing from nature to humans, and its second change took place in the systematic period when the general framework of philosophy was drawn by Plato and Aristotle. It is seen that the general framework drawn in this process affected the field of medicine as well as philosophy, and this influence clearly emerged in the 1st century BC. This study aims to reveal which schools of thought Athenaeus, who was known as a physician as well as a philosopher in that period, adopted in soul/body dualism and what kind of sources he used to practice his profession. Accordingly, it can be stated that explaining Athenaeus' philosophy based on Plato and Stoic views will make the soul/body relationship, which was an important discussion ground of that period, more understandable. As a matter of fact, during the founding period of the Roman Empire, physicians tried to treat many diseases that were assumed to be physiological and mental with psychological treatments. Additionally, this understanding is important as it shows that physical diseases are related to mental states. Physicians' efforts to heal patients with psychological disorders through distracting exercises can be interpreted as the result of such an idea.
