Notes
In this article, a letter of İzmirli İsmail Hakkı (1869-1946) found in Mehmed Said Hatiboğlu archive has been published. The letter dated 29.6.1939 was addressed to two students of Burdur Mufti Mehmet Re'fet Efendi (1879-1945). From Izmirli's writings, it is understood that Mehmet Re'fet Efendi requested him to translate the ribā bet of Ibn Ḥazm's (d. 456/1064) work called el-Muḥallā. Although İsmail Hakkı stated that he could not fulfill this request due to his busy schedule, he evaluated Ibn Ḥazm's criticisms against Ebū Ḥanīfe (d. 150/767) and the Hanafīs in his letter. In this study, the letter, which is a rejection, was published by extracting the referenced verses, hadiths and sources.
