Notes
How the subject of a scientific discipline is defined determines the scope and even the method of the issues studied in that discipline. Unfortunately, the dominant definitions in the literature regarding the "political", the subject of political science, are fragmentary definitions that are far from encompassing the whole of social and political reality. In non-Western societies such as Türkiye, current definitions and understandings cause serious misunderstandings and prevent the cumulative progress of political studies. In this article, it is shown that mainstream definitions are guilty of accepting the political order as a given, reducing the relationship between people to conflict and competition, and neglecting the process dimension of politics. It is argued that the background of these problems is the American social/political reality, which largely dominates the discipline, and the modern social sciences paradigm that has been shaped in Europe since the seventeenth century. Finally, in the article, an alternative definition to the existing definitions is attempted, which is more appropriate to the social/political reality and Turkey's needs, is more encompassing and process-based than the existing definitions.
