Ibn Khaldun is known as a philosopher of history and sociologist rather than a city planner in the modern sense. However, in the Muqaddimah, as a part of his understanding of civilization, he put forward some thoughts worth evaluating on some principles regarding the planning of the city environment. Although written six centuries ago, our reading shows that his ideas on urban planning have a very modern flavor and are still relevant in matters related to contemporary urbanization. He believes in cyclical processes, and cities and urban development are subject to a similar process. He described the culture, lifestyles, structures and problems of cities of his time by quoting his observations. It touched upon almost all aspects of the subject, including human happiness in the city, physical development of the city, environment and sustainability. What can we learn from Ibn Khaldun about city planning? How can we reconcile his wisdom and principles with the current issues our cities face today? This article also discusses the principles of urban planning put forward by Ibn Khaldun and tries to evaluate their current interpretation.
