Notes
Although the concepts of modernity and modernism are concepts that we frequently encounter both in social science literature and in daily life, there is widespread confusion about the semantic field that the concepts encompass and the aspects in which they differ from each other. This confusion leads to complex situations such as the use of concepts inappropriately, in contexts that do not fit their meanings, or interchangeably, even in many academic works. The aim of this study is to clearly show the points where the meanings of the concepts of "modernity" and "modernism" differ and intersect, as well as to try to explain their characteristics as an intra-Western debate by pointing to the historical and social context in which they emerged. In the study, the main debates that emerged within the framework of these concepts were examined with the method of comparative analysis, modernity as the historical story of the West after the 19th century; It has been demonstrated that modernism can be understood as the culture of modernity.
