Notes In the Ottoman geography, in the 15th century. century to XX. Libraries were established through book foundations until the beginning of the century. These libraries, established under the patronage of foundations, have provided services to scholars for centuries and, depending on their legal identity, have ensured that the book accumulation is passed on to the next generations. Istanbul has the distinction of being the richest city in terms of foundation libraries of the Ottoman period. In addition to the libraries created in institutions such as mosques, madrasahs, schools and lodges, the most outstanding examples of independent libraries were created in Istanbul. In this article, foundation libraries operating in Istanbul were examined within the framework of a census list prepared in 1869. The subject was introduced by explaining the culture of book endowment, which was in the background of the foundation library practice in the Ottoman Empire. Then, the distribution, characteristics and book statistics of foundation libraries in Istanbul were evaluated. As a result, in this study, the general view of the foundation book accumulation of the Ottoman capital in a certain period is revealed. It is understood that the addressees of the libraries in question are people with a certain level of education, such as madrasah students and graduates.
