It should be stated that in the Christian tradition, the woman closest to Jesus' mother, after the Virgin Mary, was Mary Magdalene. In the New Testament, it is stated that she was one of the women who helped Jesus in his mission and that she was the one who informed the other apostles about Jesus' resurrection after the cross. Although not much information is given about her in canonical sources, it can be said that Mary Magdalene had a very important position within the early Christian community, especially in terms of non-canonical sources. As a matter of fact, Mary Magdalene draws attention as one of the main speakers in some texts from the first centuries of Christianity, which include Jesus' conversations with his apostles after his resurrection. In fact, he is often praised by Jesus for understanding spiritual truths. It is also emphasized in the sources from the first centuries of Christianity that some male apostles were seriously disturbed by Mary's position and reacted to Jesus. On the other hand, for a long time in Christian history, we see that Mary Magdalene was depicted as a sinful woman who later repented. Although the fallacy of this understanding has been officially accepted in recent times, the true identity of Mary Magdalene is still an important subject of debate. Is Mary Magdalene the wife of Jesus or a highly valued disciple? In this study, it is aimed to determine the place and importance of Mary Magdalene in the history of Christianity by comparing how Mary Magdalene is depicted in both canonical and non-canonical Christian sources.
