Notes In this article, an evaluation is made of the traumas created in the social memory by the Turkish adhan experiment, which was put into practice within the framework of the national religious understanding in the first quarter of the history of the Republic and continued for approximately eighteen years. After a brief introduction emphasizing the importance of adhan as a religious indicator, a brief history of the Turkish adhan practice is given. Subsequently, based on both written sources and oral testimonies, experiences, observations and investigations reflected in the social memory on the subject are presented. Efforts to nationalize the call to prayer, which is a universal call for Muslims, have received the harshest resistance from society. Although those who recited the adhan in Arabic were sentenced to imprisonment and fines, the practice did not take hold, and the political ban was lifted in 1950, again with political intervention.
