Notes
Discussions about whether a sheikh is necessary in sulûk are especially in the VIII/XIV centuries. It intensified in the centuries, and when the Andalusian scholars could not resolve this issue even after long discussions, Abu Ishak al-Shatibi (d.790/1388), one of the well-known scholars, sought the knowledge of Moroccan scholars on this issue by preparing a treatise in the form of a survey containing the opinions of both sides on the subject. These are Abu Abdillah Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Abbad er-Rundî (d.792/1376) and Ebu'l-Abbâs Ahmed b. Kasim b. They were Abdirrahman el-Kebbâb (d.778/1376). The fatwa given by these two scholars has survived to our time in Venşerisi's work called el-Miyâru'l-Murîb. Ibn Khaldun saw Shātībī's Treatise and explained his views on this subject, even though he was not asked (and he was not a Sufi). He wrote his work titled Şifâu's-Sâil li Tehzîbi'l-Mesâil just for this purpose. In this book, in which we are aware of his harsher criticisms against Sufism compared to his introduction, Ibn Khaldun talks about three types of Sufism and discusses the nature of these three types of Sufism in terms of whether a sheikh is necessary or not.
