Notes This is debated. Hartmann, who defines aesthetic value as basically a relationship of appearance and a quality of sense perception, defines it as ethical, vital, etc. It underlines its ontological connection with other value classes and their grounding relationship with each other. However, Hartmann's view of aesthetic value presents a paradoxical situation both in itself and in terms of aesthetic judgment. How other values make aesthetic value appear without accepting an ideal pre-existence is a question that his understanding of aesthetic value cannot answer. Secondly, how can a judgment about a value that is purely sensory be universally valid? Due to these and similar problems, the problem of the status of aesthetic value is not fully clarified in Hartmann.
