Notes	Storytelling, as a literary genre, has an important place in Arabic literature from the pre-Islamic period to the present day. This literary genre, which is called by different names in each period, became widespread in other Arab countries, especially Syria, in the mid-18th century and became a profession over time. Those who practice this profession conveyed the stories to their listeners in public areas, homes and coffeehouses. The same culture and profession continued in Mardin, one of the provinces where Arabic is spoken in Turkey, until the 1960s, and in addition to transmitting a rich culture, it also played an important role in preserving the local dialect spoken here. In this article, it will be explained how this art developed in Arab societies starting from the pre-Islamic period, what topics were discussed in story nights in Mardin specifically, and what role it played in preserving the Arabic culture and the local Arabic dialect spoken here.
