A non-governmental organization is defined as a group of individuals formed outside the state administration on a voluntary basis and whose activities are carried out. These communities can have many effects on countries, such as political, cultural, social and economic effects. Especially with the developments in social media tools, audiovisual publications and information communication technologies, it is shown as the community with the fourth most important power in the world after non-governmental organizations, financial institutions, multinational companies and the media. In this study, the concept of civil society, its types, historical development, characteristics and importance are discussed. The contributions of non-governmental organizations to individuals and society are emphasized. In addition, evaluations were made based on associations from non-governmental organizations, and ANKOS Association, which operates in the field of librarianship, was examined in detail within the scope of non-governmental organizations.
