Notes The aim of this study is to conceptualize the "conservative novel" within the social conditions that created it as a literary form. Conservative novel; It differs from its counterparts such as nationalist novels and Islamic novels in important points. In the study, it is claimed that while other novel genres get their current names due to their content, the main determinant of the conservative novel is its original form that emerged during the modernization process. This form is both literary and formed by historical sociological dynamics. In order to conceptualize the conservative novel, a two-stage analysis was made on the example of four novels by Peyami Safa, using the method developed by literary sociologist Franco Moretti. In the first stage, the formal analysis of the novels was made, and in the second stage, the historical context that affected the formation of this form was analyzed. As a result, it is emphasized that the formal emergence of the conservative novel is related to the paternalist character of the experience of conservatism that emerged in the Republic and after the Republic period, developing in a dialectical relationship with Kemalism.
