Notes Imam Shafii generally listed the sources of law as the book, sunnah, ijma, companions' opinion and qiyas, and stated that the ruling should be made by following this order. Shafi'i took the statements of the companions as evidence in his new sect, as in his ancient sect. The types of Companions' Qur'an that were discussed by later scholars are present in Shafi'i's evaluations. He did not ignore the disagreements of the Companions and applied the method of choosing among different opinions on a subject according to some criteria. He saw the Companions' opinion, which is famous with the ijma of the Companions and has no opponents, as an evidence that precedes qiyas. According to him, the Companions' opinion is evidence in areas where qiyas is included, as well as in areas where it is not included.
