Notes	This famous hadith of the [Hz.] Prophet allows pilgrimage to the mosques in Medina and Jerusalem, in addition to the obligation of Umrah and Hajj to Mecca. A debate has arisen over the authenticity of this narration, which attributes an exceptional position to Medina and Jerusalem. The very early tradition of the three masjids, whose purpose excluded pilgrimages to other shrines, was recognized after a period of internal struggle in the early second century. During this period, while the location of Jerusalem was debated by some traditional circles, other temples also competed to be accepted as pilgrimage sites. While traditional scholars have reached a consensus about the hadith of the three masjids, elements of popular belief have left permanent traces on the rituals of pilgrimage to these holy places.
