This article aims to trace the attempt to establish Ankara as a modern capital in the first years of the Republic and to position it as 'new', 'modern', 'homogeneous' and 'loyal' against Istanbul in two important novels by Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu. These two novels are 'Kiralık Konak' published in 1922 and 'Ankara' published in 1934. The first of the novels deals with the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the moral collapse of cosmopolitan Istanbul as a capital depicted in 'Kiralık Konak', and the second deals with the rise of the Republic of Turkey and the rise of Ankara as a modern, national capital. When the two novels are considered together, the transformation of these two cities in the novels also corresponds to a transformation of the dominant mentality. The mentality that became dominant with the establishment of the Republic had to create a space for itself, free from the imperial legacy, and Karaosmanoğlu, as a Republican elite, served the production of this space with these two novels. This article searches for the traces of Ankara's transformation into an important symbolic place for the Republican ideology by contrasting it with Istanbul in these two novels.
